Laying Instructions in 10 Easy Steps

Laying your own Readylawn isn't that difficult. By following these steps, you can do the job with ease. With a tape, measure the area of your planned lawn (Readylawn dimensions: Length: 1.7 metres, width 590mm).

Schedule your order of Readylawn after preparatory work is completed and you are ready to install. Prompt installation on the day of delivery is crucial to a strong beginning for your lawn.

1 Clear The Site

It is important that the area on which you intend to lay your lawn is cleared of stones, sticks and other debris. An unobstructed surface is essential if the product is to look its best.

2 Spraying

Prior to laying Readylawn, any existing lawn or regrowth should be chemically killed and removed. Apply herbicide such as RoundUp to the existing lawn. Read and follow label instructions. A second application two weeks later will control any areas missed and generally ensure a more complete kill of grass and weeds.

3 Cultivation

You will need to cultivate the ground on which it will be layed to a depth of 100mm (4 inches). This can best be done with a rotary hoe. If necessary, extra soil should be added to fill any depressions.

4 Level and Consolidation

The surface should be raked and then trodden down by foot - or a light garden roller. Once you have a firm surface, Turfgrass Specialist's Starter Fertiliser should be spread at the rate of 50g per square metre (approx 1 handful) and then raked lightly to incorporate the fertiliser.

5 Screeding

Use a screeding board for the final surface preparation. Make certain that you have left your surface 15mm below the level of any footpath, or concrete edges. The most important, for the surface is level with the paths, your Readylawn will be above them.

6 Laying

Install your Readylawn immediately upon delivery. In hot weather, protect unlaid Readylawn by placing rolls in a shaded area, covering with moist sacking and/or sprinkling with water. Begin installing Readylawn along the longest straight line, such as a driveway or path. Butt and push edges and ends against each other tightly. Avoid gaps or overlaps. Stagger the joints in each row in a brick-like fashion, using a sharp knife to trim corners. Avoid leaving small strips at outer edges as they will not retain moisture. By laying a board on the laid turf, you can walk and kneel on the area without leaving unwanted footprints and other indentations. On slopes, place the Readylawn across the slope and lay from the bottom up.

7 Tamping

Once you have finished laying your lawn, take care to tamp the seams and joins and ensure firm contact is made between the new turf and the soil.

8 Trimming

Unwanted ends can be removed by trimming with a sharp knife.

9 Watering

Give your new lawn at least 20-30mm (1 inch) of water within half an hour of installation. Water daily or more often, keeping Readylawn moist until it is firmly rooted (about 2 weeks). Then less frequent and deeper watering should begin. Be certain that your new lawn has enough moisture to survive hot, dry or windy periods. Water areas near buildings more often where reflected heat dries the Readylawn.

10 Rolling

After installing your Readylawn, roll the entire area to improve turf/soil contact and remove air pockets.
